Accounting scholars and SDG research engagement: An exploration of drivers and perceived attention

Abstract: Progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires scientific knowledge (Payumo et al., 2021). For instance, some European universities met in 2016 to form the Aurora network, aiming at fostering societal change and contributing to the SDGs through academic excellence (Aurora, 2025). Management researchers are joining this initiative to help organizations incorporate the SDGs into their strategy (Berrone et al., 2023; Pizzi et al., 2020), as are accounting researchers whose SDG-related research has only recently significantly increased (Bebbington & Unerman, 2018, 2020; Erin et al., 2025). In this context, the present study explores the determinants of this increasing interest in SDG-related research among accounting academics, as well as its dissemination patterns both within and outside academic circles. To achieve this, we conduct two inter-related analyses focusing on an international sample of influential accounting scholars.
