Abstract: For firms to succeed with open innovation, they have to tailor different aspects of their organisational structures and processes. The extent of openness influences how business models need to innovate to align with specific open innovation practices. While open innovation and business model innovation are highly intertwined, there is limited research on how firms pursue these processes together, especially among smaller enterprises. To address this gap, we apply the dynamic capabilities perspective including sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring capabilities to explore this connection in SMEs and startups. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyse biotech SMEs and startups, uncovering key concepts and emerging theories about the interaction between open innovation and business model innovation. Our findings shed light on the critical role of dynamic capabilities, contribute empirical evidence, and advance theoretical perspectives. Additionally, we offer actionable insights for managers navigating the complexities of these interrelated processes.
