Abstract: With annual exports in excess of 6.5 million tonnes, Ecuador dominates the international banana trade. It has a rather original production structure compared to its Latin American competitors, since it mainly comprises small and large national producers. Despite major climate stresses meaning medium productivity, it is continuing to grow thanks to expanding surface areas. Ecuador is the only exporter country supplying all the world markets, both contract- based and spot. The sector is essential to the local economy: it represents 38 % of agricultural GDP, and is now run by the Government, which controls surface areas cultivated for export, and every year sets a minimum price paid to producers.
