Abstract: For the banana export sector, as for the world economy as a whole, 2022 will go down as a time warp. The market experienced, and more often suffered, a period of heavy disruption, when certain players were reintroduced to some realities that they had more or less left behind: the banana is an agricultural product, and the industry is based on a highly input- intensive system. A considerable fall in the available supply, soaring production costs and prices, especially at the import stage, which (finally!) broke the vicious cycle of value destruction. That was the reality of 2022. Yet awareness still needs to continue to awaken, to ensure collective funding of the necessary social and environmental transitions.
