Abstract:
Cultivated on volcanic islands boasting fertile soil and a mild climate, the Canaries banana has shown great resilience in the face of the liberalisation of the European banana market, high pressure from urban development and tourism, and occasionally massive natural constraints (sea winds, limited water availability, volcanic eruptions). Spanish consumers are particularly fond of this highly differentiated and iconic banana, whose distinction is recognised by a collective brand – the "Plátano de Canarias" – and, more recently, a PGI. It also enjoys the support of European production aid. In a context of intensifying competition on the Spanish market, the sole outlet for Canaries production, the search for alternative markets is becoming crucial.
