Abstract: All techniques and interventions are relational acts. There is therefore no such thing as good or bad evaluation, but rather evaluation criteria, and hence judgment criteria, that suit the people and institutions involved. In the context of sustainable development, the question is to characterize the quality of this relationship. We mobilize the alliance approach from the behavioral and cognitive sciences in the medical sciences. We draw on two case studies from Burkina Faso and Martinique, and on two principles of alliance – authenticity and recognition of the status of the individual – to illustrate the different benefits that evaluation can provide beyond the technical dimension of its measurement.
