Abstract: This paper aims to provide novel evidence on the interaction between trade agreements and their environmental clauses with biodiversity conservation policies. Using a difference-in-differences approach on a large sample of 211 countries over the period 2000-2021, we evaluate the effects of environmental provisions in Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) on the extent of terrestrial and marine protected areas in sig- natory countries. We find that countries signing an RTA with specific biodiversity provisions increase the coverage of their terrestrial protected areas, while there is no significant effect on marine protected areas. These effects appear mostly in the short run and on the extensive margin.
