Abstract: Ports are essential for international supply chains and therefore, for understanding the competitiveness of countries and regions. This article pro- poses a method to evaluate container port efficiency and to identify the determinants of port efficiency scores. The double bootstraping model applied to 226 container ports and 38 Mediterranean ports in 2010 leads to the following conclusions. Half of efficient container ports are located in Asia and in particular, in China (5 ports). Western Mediterranean ports are relatively more efficient, contrary to those located on the East Coast or in the Black Sea. Southern Mediterranean ports are close to the average. Furthermore, port inefficiency would be as much explain by geographical factors (deviation to main international shipping routes) than by network characteristics such as the number of calls and the average age of vessel calling
