Abstract:
This chapter assesses the extent to which various alternative organizational models support and embody the ideal of responsible business in ways that differ from conventional business forms. Responsible business is conceptualized here as avoiding negative social and environmental externalities ("doing no harm") and generating positive externalities and public goods ("doing good"). Based on this framework, the potential and limitations of six widely discussed alternative models for fostering responsible business conduct are analyzed. Focusing on the organizational level, this chapter reviews cooperatives, state-owned enterprises, social enterprises, foundation-owned enterprises, democratically organized firms, and sharing economy business models. Through an examination of ownership models, stakeholder participation, and local embeddedness, some of the underlying mechanisms that enable responsible management practices within alternative organizations are highlighted and discussed.
