Case study (PL025-1): Impacts of the Red Sea Attacks on global supply chains

Abstract: In the spiral of the Hamas-Israel conflict, the Houthi Group (Yemen) issued a statement attacking ships related to Israel. In November 2023, the car carrier Galaxy Leader became the first victim of the Red Sea crisis. Many ships, especially container ships, had to suspend the conventional Suez route and divert to the Cape of Good Hope route. This is a rare time since the mid-1970s, the African route has become the main shipping route on the Asia-Europe axis. The case helps the learner explore/analyse disruption at a strategic maritime choke point. In particular, they can evaluate the effects of a crisis on diversified stakeholders of the global supply chains, such as shipping companies, ports, shippers and the environment.
