Abstract: The higher education institutions in Colombia (IES), active actors in the economic system and key players in society are by definition non-governmental organizations, they appropriated the generalized practice of generating, transferring, and putting into practice a mission statement, This mission statement is the reason of exitance of the organization and according to the literature should have some key characteristics that ensure that the mission statement in on the capacity to offer tools and guidance for the generation of strategies on the short, medium and long term. The present is an exploratory project that present the characterization of the mission statement of 167 mission statements of the Colombian higher education system. After this characterization, relationships with key variables such as the number of graduates, IP, publications, and high-quality programs are presented. The results suggest that a well-rounded mission statement, encompassing multiple strategic elements, could positively impact quality.
