Abstract:
Hospitals today face the challenge of improving patient outcomes and reliability. Our study aims to provide an overview of the effects of accreditation on hospitals. The study is based on a systematic review of the literature, conducted using a structured methodological approach to study selection and analysis. Articles published between 2019 and 2023 were identified from the Web of Science, Scopus, and Springer databases. The following keywords were used: ((hospital) AND (accreditation) AND (impact OR effect OR output OR outcome OR influence OR result OR consequences)). The initial search of the database yielded a total of 31,790 articles. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of 28 empirical articles analysing the effects of hospital accreditation. Accreditation was found to have mostly positive impacts on organisational culture, organisational change, quality of care, patient safety, patient experiences, standardisation, and process improvement. Accreditation also has a positive impact on control systems, clarification of responsibilities, training and education in hospitals. Few negative impacts were noted, including increased costs, increased workload, administrative overload and high staff stress during accreditation. In conclusion, recent literature suggests that accreditation is a structuring lever for organisational transformation and overall improvement in hospital performance, provided that its implementation is accompanied by change management strategies to limit its restrictive effects on resources and staff
