An affordance lens for family caregivers’ individual information systems: the case of pediatric cancer

Abstract: This research-in-progress paper investigates how caregiving parents of children with cancer construct and adapt their own Individual Information Systems (IIS) through situated uses of digital technologies. Drawing on a relational understanding of affordances, our focus is on examining how the concrete practices of caregivers shape the configuration of their IIS. The study adopts an interpretive approach based on 37 semi-structured interviews with parents. Our analysis follows a five-step coding process that combines inductive categorization with theoretical grounding. Preliminary findings — focusing on the Human–Technology lens — reveal a wide range of interactions between parents and digital tools, shaped by emotional regulation, organizational needs, and strategies of distancing. Future phases will expand the analysis, involving institutional dimensions ( hospital, family, school, administrative systems) as well as the triadic interplay between human, technology, and institution. This work contributes to theorizing affordances as dynamic elements of action in extreme care context.
