Cost of living in the French overseas territories: can logistics contribute to easing social tensions?

Abstract:
The high cost of living in overseas territories stems from major structural constraints: geographic isolation, strong dependence on imports, and maritime freight costs that can account for up to 30% of the final retail price. The cases of New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Vanuatu, and Fiji illustrate the diversity of the economic and social impacts associated with these constraints. In this context, strengthening logistical autonomy emerges as a strategic lever to contain inflationary pressures and prevent social unrest. Beyond economic considerations, the issue at stake is social cohesion and population well-being—both essential conditions for the sustainable development of overseas territories.
