Abstract:
The international econometrics conference organized by the CNRS in May 1955 constitutes a moment of confrontation between two major approaches to macro dynamics, one, often described as "non-linear," based on the use of functional models and the the other, "linear," articulated with stochastic models. Very quickly, this episode faded away as the second approach subsequently dominated the first. This conference, however, reveals that the future was not written and that the field of possibilities for macroeconomics, in 1955, remained open.
