Abstract: The working conditions of young employees display marked specificities. In 2019, workers under the age of 30 were more exposed than their counterparts aged 30 to 49 to job insecurity, physical constraints, and lack of autonomy. Conversely, young workers reported better social relations at work, greater professional recognition, and fewer value conflicts. These working conditions vary significantly by gender, level of education, and occupational category. Part of these differences can nevertheless be explained by individual characteristics and employment conditions that distinguish young workers from their older counterparts, particularly differences in tenure within the establishment and in the occupation held. However, even when controlling for comparable characteristics, gaps persist: young employees remain more likely than others to be assigned to physically demanding, less secure positions with limited autonomy.
