Abstract: The energy transition has been driven by energy communities. This research aimed to map Brazilian energy communities and identify value co-creation and value co-destruction from the perspective of citizens. In a case study conducted in the first photovoltaic energy community in Minas Gerais, Brazil, we found that cooperatives function as facilitators of co-production for citizens. We conclude that value co-creation and value co-destruction can be analysed from value dimensions. It is possible to co-create and co-destroy value in the same practice from the perspective of the same actor when it comes to different dimensions. We highlight the relevance of proximity relationships for value co-creation and the role of intermediary actors in value recovery. Finally, we suggest studies on the relevance of trust and intermediary actors for the co-creation of value and prevention of value co-destruction.
