Abstract:
This study examines recent changes in food distribution in Algeria and their repercussions on consumption behaviour as well as on public health. It is part of a nutritional transition influenced by urbanization, the internationalization of lifestyles and the growing popularity of fast food, which has led to an increase in the consumption of ultra-processed products. Parallel to this trend, we have observed a worrying rise in non-communicable diseases, such as obesity and diabetes. The analysis highlights the importance of transformations in the agro-food system, which is characterized by a rapid expansion of companies in the sector and a diversification of the food offer. In response to these developments, the study highlights the urgent need for a sustainable food transition that harmonizes public health, economic development, and the promotion of local culinary specialties. It also underscores the necessity of effective public policies, appropriate nutritional education, and consumer awareness campaigns to encourage healthier and more sustainable food choices. Finally, this communication highlights the importance of health professionals and multidisciplinary approaches in prevention efforts, while also valuing local and community initiatives that effectively support changes in eating habits.
