How meta-organizations matter

Abstract: In this chapter, we argue that three key characteristics of meta-organizations render them a salient force: their influence on their members, their impact on non-members, and their interactions with other meta-organizations in larger organizational landscapes. These three characteristics constitute the three main sections of the book. We detail how meta-organizations influence their members, thereby affecting how their members function and how they influence contemporary society. We then show how meta-organizations attempt to exert direct influence on non-members – the rest of society – often with great success. Finally, we argue that the salience of meta-organizations is affected by their position within a densely populated landscape of meta-organizations.
