Abstract:
The determinants of voluntary societal and environmental disclosure (VSED) have been little studied in the specific context of the banking sector, particularly the impact of environmental performance. This paper analyzes this relationship via financing allocated to fossil fuels firms by a sample of 35 international banks (period 2016-2019) on VSED indicators. The results corroborate the legitimacy hypothesis: banks optimize their extra-financial communication when they increase their financing of the fossil fuel sector. The link between performance and VSED is influenced by the geographical origin of the banks and the environmental policy of the home country.
