Abstract:
Cyber risk is a major organizational issue, affecting all types of organizations and sometimes leading to significant consequences. Cyber attackers exploit various types of vulnerabilities; however, most incidents originate from the exploitation of human behaviors, such as clicking on phishing emails. Despite this, cyber risk is still largely perceived as a highly technical issue within organizations, and experts often struggle to foster secure behaviors among employees. This raises the question of how cyber risk perception can be influenced within organizations. Adopting a critical realist perspective and grounded in design science research, this study aims to design an artifact intended to address low cyber risk perception – an intra-organizational cyberscore – and to identify the underlying mechanisms through which it operates. The artifact is evaluated within a banking organization using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study ultimately proposes six design principles transferable to other contexts and similar organizational challenges.
