Abstract: The concept of divulgation, i.e. the disclosure of information that has been kept secret, has received surprisingly little attention in the social sciences. Related notions, such as denunciation, alert or rumour, have been studied more thoroughly, but without providing an all-encompassing perspective. This parochialism leads to categorical confusion, practical complications and empirical ambiguity. Moreover, research on the subject is essentially anhistorical, which poses even more problems. To address these issues, I offer a historicised approach to the notion of divulgation. The aim is to consider divulgation as a concept that complements existing notions and opens up new research perspectives.
