Abstract: The present article defends the notion of interdisciplinarity in the realm of information systems research. The study commences with an examination of the notion of discipline and disciplinary exchange. This paper sets out to trace the history of the discipline of information systems, based on three criteria: the subject of study, the method, and the institutionalization (of the information systems community). The paper highlights the fact that interdisciplinarity has remained a minority approach. It is demonstrated that in the contemporary era, interdisciplinarity has become imperative in addressing pressing issues, including those related to climate change and equality. Furthermore, the assertion of interdisciplinarity in relation to other fields of study is also discussed. Finally, although the path is rife with obstacles, a research agenda focused on interdisciplinarity is proposed.
