Abstract: To Mitchell, classical and neoclassical economic theory was still embedded in Bentham's utilitarianism. The first goal is to explain his criticism of Bentham's thought ; then, to set off reasons why Bentham and Ricardo could not set themselves free from utilitarianism. The second purpose is to put forward a limit of Mitchell criticism. Notwithstanding his empasis on instincts and institutions, actually Mitchell remains prisoner inside the paradigm of the utilitarian reason.
