Abstract: This article presents a critical synthesis of Jean Cartelier's Essai sur la monnaie comme langage, which proposes a refoundation of Political Economy based on nominal analysis. His most profound and perhaps most original theoretical contribution is to place Keynesian nominal analysis within a general anthropology: what distinguishes human beings from the animal kingdom is their ability to produce and manipulate symbolic languages. From this follows a decisive consequence: the economy is seen as a symbolic practice based on coded, socially recognized statements. Cartelier thus gives money the status of the language infrastructure of the economy, in the same way that law structures politics, or religion the sacred.
