Abstract:
This article examines the multifaceted impact of innovation on the performance, competitiveness, and sustainable development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the era of globalization and rapid technological advancement. Innovations, encompassing product, process, marketing, and organizational dimensions, are increasingly recognized as a critical factor for competitive advantage and growth in today's dynamic business environment. SMEs, often characterized by limited resources, lower market power, yet greater flexibility, can leverage innovation to enhance operational efficiency, support market differentiation, and improve overall business outcomes. This study synthesizes findings from recent academic research, analyzing how various forms of innovation contribute to improved financial performance, increased market share, and heightened resilience among SMEs. The challenges and strategic approaches adopted by SMEs to effectively integrate innovation into their business models are also discussed, including financial barriers, skill shortages, and difficulties in accessing external knowledge networks. The review underscores the importance of fostering an innovative organizational culture, investing in research and development (R&D), and implementing digital technologies as key enablers for SMEs to thrive in highly competitive environments. The results unequivocally emphasize that a strategic focus on innovation is not merely an option but an absolute necessity for the long-term profitability, survival, and success of SMEs worldwide. The article concludes with recommendations for policymakers and managers, highlighting the need to create ecosystems that support innovation at both local and national levels. The study also illustrates these concepts through practical case studies and identifies emerging trends such as AI-as-a-Service and eco-innovations that will shape the future SME landscape.
