Empathy and Self-Awareness as Correlates of Employees’ Behavioural and Cognitive Work Attitudes in Federal Tertiary Institutions in South-East Nigeria Authors

Abstract: The relationships between empathy and employees behavioural attitude to work, and between self- awareness and employees cognitive attitude to work, were investigated in selected federal tertiary institutions in South-East Nigeria. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used for the study based on the social intelligence competency and employees attitude framework. There were 4,903 academic and senior non-academic staff, of which 369 respondents were sampled using proportional sampling methods. 290 sets of questionnaire were returned, representing a 78.6% response rate after discarding unanswered and wrongly answered ones. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection, and descriptive statistics, along with Spearman's correlation, were used to analyze the data at a 0.05 significance level. The respondents gave high scores for empathy (M = 3.99), self-awareness (M = 4.03), behavioural attitude (M = 4.02), and cognitive attitude (M = 4.04).
