Abstract:
The proliferation of remote teamwork (Qin et al. 2021, Raghuram et al. 2019), accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has shifted collective creativity sessions to online spaces. Creativity, a critical skill for innovation (Amabile et al., 1996), is highly valued by organizations, prompting inquiries into their capacity to nurture creativity within spaces that have transitioned from physical to virtual realms. Some impacts are well-known, on one hand, working with geographically distributed teams, featuring greater diversity in membership (Han et al., 2014; Varhelahti & Turnquist, 2021) favors creativity. On the other hand, studies show adverse consequences of virtual work on team creativity: maintaining group thinking and team cohesion seem more challenging in virtual collaborative settings (Ruggieri, 2009), and technological impacts can radically change processes and collaboration dynamics (Leonardi, 2012).
