Teaming up with AI: drivers of creative engagement in software development

Abstract:
Studies suggest that the use of generative AI influences the creativity of individuals and teams within organisations. Since 2021, developers have increasingly adopted such tools to support programming tasks beyond mere code generation. Drawing on a mixed-methods approach, this study investigates how developers use and interact with ChatGPT. 12 interviews and responses from 169 participants to a questionnaire reveal two modes of developer-AI relationship: AI as assistant and as a companion. These modes differently shape developers' engagement in the creative process. This paper proposes a model to understand how the companion mode influences creative engagement, as well as how variables such as intellectual risk-taking and creative self-efficacy relate to its adoption.
