Abstract:
Impact investing seeks to reconcile financial returns with non-financial outcomes. To this end, measuring the impacts generated (economic, social and environmental) is a crucial step. Drawing on a study of impact measurement practices among investment funds operating in Africa, we find highly heterogeneous practices that fall well short of expected standards. In this brief, we identify the challenges facing funds and propose several avenues to help them strengthen their capacity to measure impact.
