Abstract:
This paper reports the results of the survey of 78 human resource managers and 219 managers from foreign-owned, joint venture, and locally owned export-oriented clothing manufacturing companies in Sri Lanka. The study investigated human resource managers' and managers' views on the processes that export-oriented clothing manufacturing companies use to develop managers. The findings of the study shed light on the formal development process that is commonly used in the export-oriented clothing manufacturing industry and on differences across companies of different ownership. The investigations revealed that not all human resource managers actively engage in the provision of different formal management development processes. Instead, some development processes are solely provided by the heads of the departments within their departments without having any specific organization-led development initiative.
