Abstract:
Knowledge management has become a central strategic challenge for contemporary organizations facing increasing complexity of information systems, data fragmentation, and heightened requirements for reliability, security, and governance. The recent emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has profoundly transformed organizational knowledge production, structuring, and dissemination practices by automating cognitive activities that were previously highly dependent on human expertise. However, these technologies raise major concerns regarding source traceability, the reliability of generated content, and epistemic responsibility. In this context, blockchain emerges as a complementary technology capable of strengthening knowledge governance through its properties of immutability, traceability, and decentralization. Positioned within the field of information systems management, this article offers an in-depth conceptual analysis of the articulation between generative artificial intelligence and blockchain in knowledge management systems. Drawing on the literature on knowledge management, absorptive capacity, technology appropriation, and sociotechnical approaches, we show that the GAI–blockchain coupling enables the design of a hybrid knowledge management system that reconciles cognitive performance, governance, and responsibility. Finally, the article proposes an analytical framework intended to guide researchers and practitioners in the design of augmented, traceable, and governed knowledge management systems.
