Abstract:
Women's access to the IT sector and their career advancement are often hindered by a persistent stereotype that associates technical expertise with masculinity. Although overt discrimination based on this stereotype is being addressed in many organizations, the stereotype persists through informal interactions that perpetuate a culture of inequality, which largely explains the underrepresentation of women. Inclusion is seen as a response to these inequalities and requires further research. With this in mind, we drew on the findings of an ethnographic study describing several hackathon cases, and analyzed them using an IT inclusion model. We identified actions likely to transform a social system structured on the gender-technology stereotype—that is, to change the dynamics of interactions and improve gender equality.
