Abstract:
Asia, land of traditions, is also a vast laboratory where micro-financial practices and institutions actively contribute in the battle against financial exclusion, supporting the poorest people, encouraging the "empowerment" of the least fortunate and favouring economic growth in the least wealthy countries by creating activities of production and trade. This book evaluates policies and experiments in India, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and China. It judges them mainly through three lines of reflection: the institutionalisation of social practices, the articulation of public policy and the fight against inequality and discrimination. This book presents the reader with a kind of co-production, consisting of hybrids, mixes, crossovers and borrowings, where "traditions" and "innovations" are mutually enriching. The authors conclude by asking questions about the future. Without being pessimistic, they nevertheless can see clearly through the reigning optimism about reaching the millennium objectives in the battle against poverty, and they do not try to cover up the weaknesses.
