Abstract:
Urban sprawl and mobility. - The evolution in mobility and particularly the growth in car traffic have brought about significant social, economic and environment problems. This is not compatible with urban sustainable development. Urban Sprawl leads to significant changes in individual mobility, especially commuting trips that have been analyzed in this paper from the example of six French urban areas. Despite differences in terms of degree of suburbanization, commuting behavior, analyzed on the basis of traffic flow geography and the share of people living and working in the same municipality in 1990 and 1999, has produced similar evolutions. People living in the city center rely more and more on the jobs located in the periphery, while the number of classic commutes (periphery to city center) are significantly declining. The number of people living and working in the periphery is growing but this does not mean that this leads to a good jobs housing balance : the rapid decline in the number of people living and working in the same municipality supports this.
