Abstract: There have been few past attemps to compare experiences gained through the application of different approaches to passenger travel data collection in the francophone and anglophone countries of West and Southern Africa. Such an experiences and expertise would appear to have merit on the grounds that these two geo-linguistic contexts share conditions which make the collection of reliable and instructive travel data particularly difficult. The aim of this paper is to initiate such a comparison, and to identify a research agenda through which shared common problems might be addressed. In identifying common problems, the paper draws from the available French and English literature on survey methods applied in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as from the authors' experiences in designing and administering surveys in cities of Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal and South Africa. Problems are discussed in terms of survey design and administration.
