Abstract: Since the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, the flexibility mechanisms have moved from formal definitions and scope to practical tools. Potential participants in the carbon markets established by the Kyoto Protocol have changed over the years. The objective of the chapter is to analyse the impacts of these changes on the carbon market through five cases or scenarios that reflect the chronological landmarks in the negotiation process and the building of the Kyoto Protocol flexibility mechanisms.
