Abstract: Value of human life and road safety : from incubation to the emergence of new collective preferences. – The 2003 July-August issue of Transport magazine started with a short paper by Rémy Prudhomme, wondering about the credibility of the values of human life. The consent to pay one million euro per life spared seemed exaggerated. The authors of the following paper however, are in line with the reply made by Marcel Boiteux. Without denying that "bubble" phenomena may occur when assessing external cost, the "cost of death" increase such as decided in France in the Boiteux II report shows the emergence of a lasting collective preference.
