Abstract: The paper presents a nexus concept approach between "network", "industrial coordination" and "proximity" as a means to characterize this new productive body labelled "network firm". Patrimony is the fundamental analytical category which enables this nexus. It can be attributed either to a territory or to an organisation. The network firm is a particular organisation. This essential characteristic is its establishment as a patrimony of resources based on authority. These resources underlie the flux or relationship between the pivot-firm and its suppliers as part of the network - this relationship will in some best cases allow genuine cooperation in design. In a wider understanding, the nexus concept contributes to clarify the link between "proximity" and "territory" (as local territory) which is the main investigation area of the research team titled "Dynamiques de proximité". Some conceptual contributions of this team are reconsidered in order to emphasize their connections. Proximity is thought as an attribute to an active physical person. Proximity concerns means of access of a person to a patrimony that serves implementation of activity, particularly the one of the local territory where the activity is established. In that respect, proximity is both geographical and institutional, the former being a condition to access patrimony and the latter a result of that access. Proximity is as important a condition to implement productive activities as is coordination.
