Abstract: The paper will first of all show the increase in disparities within French urban areas during the period 1985-2001. This is based on the distribution and evolution of average household taxable income per municipality. A deeper analysis carried out on municipalities located within urban areas of over 100,000 inhabitants shows that less rich spaces are characterised by the weakest progression in average household taxable income. However, the richest municipalities in terms of revenue are also characterised by the strongest progression. An analysis at an intra-communal scale allows us to measure the residential segregation of households due to income. The use of the index of segregation bring us then to compare different urban areas. At the end, we try to explain this growth of spatial segregation.
