Abstract: This paper is based on a field study conducted in 2005 in the peri-urban areas of Mumbai, analysing the shape of urban sprawl on those territories. This analysis has been carried out on two levels. The first level of analysis deals with Mumbai's Metropolitan Area's urbanisation since the 1960s. Regional development has not been uniform neither in time, nor in space and the unequal access to infrastructures and urban public amenities induces a hierarchical organization of peri-urban towns, which creates competition between them. The second level of analysis highlights the urbanisation process of satellite towns. Different instruments of urban policies were applied to develop the area. The urban sprawl of these secondary centres has induced an unequal development between regularised or illegal areas and the proliferation of informal settlements. These inequalities in peri-urban territories have worsened the social divisions between the rich and the poor, between the native population and the migrants.
