Abstract:
Considered sometimes as one of the factors of industrialization, the patent system has always been discussed and contested. The purpose of this chapter is to understand this state of permanent protest. After recalling the main points of economic analysis and historiography of the patent, we will discuss how it is justified, but also the uncertainties about its effectiveness. We suggest, finally, the extent to which patents can be a reducer of uncertainty.
