Abstract:
This paper investigates the connections between the size of firms and the wages of the newly hird workers in Frances. We present estimates controlling for numerous variables representing individual and job characteristics and find significant size-wage gaps. We show that they are not due to unobservable employee characteristics. Nor, in all likelihood, are they entirely due to working conditions. Testing a selection model, we find that large firms pay more for each year of schooling and that the size-wage gap is wider for high-skilled workers. We detect an employee selection bias that is positive in small firms and negative in large firms.
