Abstract: The cooperative movement in Vendée (West France) is originated in the tension between traditionnal society in Vendée and the acceleration of modernisation after Second World War. The reference to associationism of the 19th Century has to be minored. The approach of the modernity by Cornelius Castoriadis gives a frame to understand the relationship between cooperatives and modernity
