Abstract:
The aim of this research is to provide empirical and theoretical insights to our understanding of the links between technological and organizational dynamics. More precisely, we draw on recent works in industrial economics and strategic management dealing with the concept of modularity. According to this literature, the product architecture is reflected in the organizational architecture. This can be thought as an isomorphism between products and organizations: the more the product is integrated, the more the firm in charge of its design and manufacturing is integrated. We question this thesis by using a survey accross firms designing and manufacturing complex systems. Our main results are : -the assumption does not resist this empirical survey. Our interpretation of this result is that the relation between technology and organization cannot be insulated from any other considerations. In particular we contend that modularization is driven by strategic dynamics ; -modular strategies give rise to new production systems in complex products industries. The industrial structures (the product, the process and the vertical supply chain) come to be organized around the new modules.
