Abstract:
This article considers the operation of the Bank of Martinique during the transition period after the abolition of slavery. Firstly, it emphasizes first the relatively good performance of this institution in terms of financial intermediation. If the bank has succeeded in rationalizing credit distribution and meeting the new financial constraints raised by the transition from slavery to free labor, it has progressively renounced its original agricultural calling in favour of trading and speculation activities. Secondly, it shows that the existence of divergent interests of commercial and industrial world made it difficult to solve the recurrent crises of circulation of the period.
