Abstract: Purpose – Despite extensive studies of conflicts in IT project teams, this literature presents limits as for the influence of conflicts on project outcome. In particular, this literature has problems to take into account the complexity of projects and their specificities, which are essential to understand the outcome of IT projects. To fill these gaps, we propose to complete the conflict perspective with an approach centered on the controversies, a process related and sociotechnical approach.Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a longitudinal case study and explores the outcome of an IT project: the case "Pupitre Virtuel".Findings – The paper extends existing literature on conflict management in the IT project teams, by revealing the interest in taking into account controversies (according to Actor-Network Theory) for project success or failure.Practical implications We suggest a new way to understand the relational management of projects to the project actors (executives or team members, private or public) a new way of understanding.Originality/value – The paper is original in the way in which it contributes to the reconciliation of methods in terms of variance and process.Paper type Conceptual Paper
