Abstract: Because the French public sector is particularly attractive for women even more than for men, young people could decide to achieve educational levels exceeding those 'normally' required in order to facilitate their entry in this sector. This paper deals with the overeducation phenomenon of women compared to men in their early career in the public sector compared to the private one. We are using Generation 1998 survey from Cereq. In this survey, individuals, who had left school three years before, were interviewed in 2001. This paper focuses on the assessment of overeducation from an objective and subjective point of view. When they are overeducated from an objective point of view, do young women feel less frequently overeducated than young men ? We find that the willingness to pay (being overeducated without feeling) for working in the public sector and particularly for life-long employment is higher for young women than for men.
