Abstract: Territorial social dialogue is now reality as testified by the many locally-observed initiatives. The notion appeared in France in the mid-1990s, linked to the development of local public policies. A certain number of employment and vocational training issues aroused union and management concern on the territorial level without them being able to find a real entry point into branches, companies or national inter-professional organisations to intervene. How can unions and management contribute to securing employees' careers? We will try to answer this question through a status report on the development of atypical forms of employment in four European countries (Germany, Spain, Italy, France) and on the development of territorial social dialogue. This aspect is tackled from two angles: firstly the territorial social dialogue approach in literature and secondly from an empirical viewpoint on the basis of experimentation in various sectors in Lombardy, Catalonia, Bade-Wurttemberg and Rhône-Alpes.
