Abstract: We are probably on the eve of a radical change the role of taxis in urban mobility with, the one hand, growing need for personalized services that taxis are most likely to offer, and on the other hand, the prospect of witnessing both brakes to their development: availability and relatively high cost, loosen. These two constraints may first be softened by a better regulation that would open to competition market segments where administered prices or quotas are not justified. The introduction of competition will accelerate the introduction of technical innovations that, by reducing empty miles and wait times, will further improve the availability of taxis where they are requested and will reduce their cost.
